Clem 7 Tunnel

Fibre Optic Linear Heat Detection System Installation

Client Name: Clem 7 Tunnel

Location: Brisbane

Our team successfully executed a technically advanced project involving the installation of a fibre optic linear heat detection system within the Clem 7 Tunnel. This system, incorporating 26 kilometers of heat detection cable installed along the tunnel roof, is designed to deliver superior fire detection and enhance safety across this critical infrastructure.

Key aspects of the project included:

Nighttime Operations in a Live Tunnel

To minimize public disruption and maintain operational efficiency, the project was carried out primarily during nighttime hours, when the tunnel was safely closed to traffic. Strict planning and coordination were essential to ensure the tunnel reopened on time for daytime operations.

Working at Heights

The installation process involved extensive work along the tunnel roof, requiring the use of specialized equipment and highly trained personnel to ensure safety and precision. Adherence to robust safety protocols was paramount throughout the project.

System Modernization and MODBUS Integration

The fire detection system was modernized by replacing the outdated low-level interface connections with a high-level interface utilizing MODBUS technology. This advanced communication protocol enables seamless and real-time data exchange between the Linear Heat Detection (LHD) controllers and connected systems.

Each zone of the LHD system was made visible through a third-party connection to HORUS, an advanced monitoring and visualization platform. HORUS provides a user-friendly interface for operators to view and manage all zones in real time. Key features of HORUS include:

  • Comprehensive Zone Monitoring: Each heat detection zone is displayed, allowing operators to pinpoint potential hazards with precision.
  • Real-Time Data Analysis: HORUS continuously analyzes data from the MODBUS interface, enabling rapid identification of temperature anomalies or fire risks.
  • Remote Accessibility: The system allows authorized users to monitor the tunnel’s safety conditions remotely, ensuring quick response capability.
  • Integration Capabilities: HORUS acts as a centralized platform, seamlessly integrating with other fire safety and building management systems to provide a unified view of the tunnel’s operational status.

Full Redundancy and Cross-Detection Design

The system was engineered with dual LHD controllers, ensuring full redundancy to maintain continuous functionality in the event of a fault. Cross-detection capabilities were incorporated, enhancing the system’s ability to verify and localize fire events with high accuracy.

Adherence to a Strict Program

The project was executed on a tight schedule to align with the operational requirements of the live tunnel. Careful coordination with stakeholders and efficient resource management were critical in meeting these deadlines without compromising quality or safety.

This project highlights our expertise in delivering innovative, high-stakes solutions under challenging conditions, ensuring the safety and reliability of critical infrastructure while integrating cutting-edge technology for optimal performance.
