Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System (EWIS) Upgrade
Client Name: Sofitel Brisbane
The EWIS upgrade project involved replacing and enhancing the existing emergency warning and intercommunication system to improve safety and compliance with fire and evacuation regulations. Given the operational nature of the facility, careful planning and phased execution were implemented to minimize disruption while ensuring a smooth transition to the upgraded system.
Key Technical Aspects and Project Highlights
- System Isolation and Component Replacement
- The existing EWIS system was isolated and de-isolated as required to facilitate component replacements.
- Upgrades commenced at the main EWIS panel on the ground floor and progressed to level 4 to ensure a systematic transition.
- Background Music System Adjustments
- The project included the decommissioning of existing background music relays.
- New Tyco line attenuator modules were installed on each floor, with junction box wiring reconfigured to support the new attenuators.
- Integration with Pertronic Fire Detection and Indicating Equipment (FDCIE)
- The upgraded EWIS was interfaced with the Pertronic FDCIE, ensuring seamless integration and fault monitoring capability.
- Two new fire trips were installed to signal background music cut-off during emergencies.
- System Connectivity and Performance Testing
- Cabling was installed between both EWIS panels to ensure reliable communication and control.
- Comprehensive speaker sound level testing was conducted across multiple areas, with findings reported to management.
- Adjustments to speaker and amplifier levels were made as needed to achieve the required 75dB sound level.
- Any additional speakers required were documented, with variation approvals sought before installation.
Outcomes
- The EWIS upgrade significantly improved emergency communication effectiveness across the facility.
- Careful scheduling ensured minimal disruption to operations, with phased execution to maintain safety compliance.
- The integration with the fire detection system enhanced the overall fire safety infrastructure, ensuring prompt and effective emergency response.
By modernizing the EWIS with advanced components and enhanced functionality, this project has strengthened the facility’s emergency preparedness and communication systems, improving safety for all occupants.
