Fire System Compliance Upgrade

Project Overview:
Fire Boar was engaged to upgrade and modify the fire system to meet compliance with AS1670.4, AS1670.1, and AS2118.1.99. This project involved the removal, replacement, and installation of key fire safety components, including sprinklers, smoke detectors, and evacuation speakers.

Technical Achievements:

• Fire Sprinkler System Upgrades: Removed 66 existing sprinkler heads and converted 80 exposed pendant sprinklers to concealed space heads. Installed 41 new exposed pendant heads, 103 below-ceiling heads, and 11 under-duct sprinkler heads to enhance fire suppression coverage.
• Fire Detection & Alarm Enhancements: Installed 29 new addressable smoke detectors and 4 thermal detectors, replacing outdated units for improved fire detection accuracy.
• Evacuation & Warning System Improvements: Upgraded evacuation audio systems with 26 recessed and 11 surface-mounted evacuation speakers, ensuring clear and effective emergency communication.
• System Integration & Compliance: Reprogrammed the Fire Indicator Panel (FIP) to accommodate the updated addressable system and provided full as-installed documentation, including Form 12 and O&M manuals.

Challenges Overcome:

• Operational Coordination in a Remote Location: Managed travel logistics and scheduling to complete works efficiently in Mackay, ensuring compliance with project timelines while minimizing additional site visits.
• Live System Modifications: Conducted safe and strategic drain-downs of the sprinkler and dry fire systems only when scheduled, preventing unnecessary disruptions to fire protection services.
• Access & Installation Complexity: Utilized Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) and 12ft steps to safely install and modify fire protection components in hard-to-reach areas.
